How Does Acupuncture Work? Part I: According to Western science...

Hello!  I get asked at least weekly how acupuncture actually works.  Below you can read the short version of some modern research to explain its functioning.

Although it's not entirely known what acupuncture does according to Western (Allopathic) Medical Science there are many theories as to why it can be so powerful.

Here are a few ideas:

1.  Acupuncture regulates the nervous system.  This results in the increased production of biochemicals systemically and locally (at the site of pain or a symptom).  Two examples of biochemicals are endorphins (painkillers) and immune cells.

2.  Acupuncture can alter brain chemistry by adjusting the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones.  This affects body functions: regulating immune reactions, blood pressure, body temperature as well as subjective sensations such as your mood.

3.  Acupuncture can increase the rate of healing response.  This happens because it stimulates various signaling systems such as the endocrine system, which may alleviate symptoms or cure the disease entirely.
Other theories?  These have been deduced from various clinical observations:
Augmentation of Immunity Theory - Resistance to disease, increased immune function
Endorphin Theory - Pain reduction
Neurotransmitter Theory - Better mood, reduction in inflammation
Circulatory Theory - Muscle relaxation, increase in blood flow to organs
Gate Control Theory - Higher pain tolerance
Motor Gate Theory - Hasten motor recovery to paralysis
Homeostatic or Regulatory Effect - Improvement of homeostasis and reaction to disease
Bioelectric Theory - Stimulation of cells and tissue growth
Nervous System Theories - Nerve stimulation resulting in varied and complex results
